    Guys, we need your help here. We've been using our existing spawn since pretty much the first week or two of the server's existence, and frankly, we're starting to run out of ideas for decorating it!

    So, how better to address this than by running our very own...

    SERVER SPAWN CONTEST!

    Update:

    That's right, folks!
    We need to get ourselves a brand spankin' new spawn, not just one of the redecorated ones. As useful and fun as it's been to keep our existing spawn, and as much of a staple as it may be in our world, we would like to move forward and check out the possibility of new and more exciting builds to show off from players.

    There are a few requirements for our new spawn, stated below:

    1. The spawn cannot be larger than 126x126, INCLUDING the border around it. This is exceptionally important to remember - include the border in your calculations. There will need to be at least a one block border of some kind - stone/nether brick, leaves, logs, whatever - and that will be included in the size calculations.

    2. It must be modular. This is a more ambiguous requirement, but basically, we'd like to be able to do what we've been doing to our current spawn with the new one. The ability to tweak the colour scheme, exchange small builds for other small builds, and just generally spruce it up for whatever occasion may crop up is something we really enjoy doing as a staff. Additionally, we're going to have more mini-contests in the future to get builds featured for events like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and more! If you'd like to include ideas for different decorations so we have a better idea of it visually, that's also perfectly acceptable.

    3. There must be some feature that displays the name of the server, and optionally, the Nerdfighter salute. While it would be nice if we could move away from the sign across the Nerdfighter hand signal, ultimately, that is a very integral part of our server and our larger community. However, we'd like to welcome more unique and novel ways of implementing familiar features into new and exciting builds!

    4. We also need to show off Hank and John in some form or fashion! This is a less strict requirement, but being able to incorporate Hank and John in our spawn would be really nice. This could either be their statues (of any size, within reason) or maybe a build commemorating something they've worked on or that represents them (e.g. a small Cinco de Mayo section tastefully incorporated to represent Hank, or a reference to one of John's novels). Be creative with this, there is no absolute requirement for how this must be executed!

    5. A place where new players can retrieve the rulebook, Hank's greeting book, and other starter materials. This doesn't even need to be a large build - a small shack immediately visible when someone types /spawn would suffice just fine. Creativity is encouraged here. We've seen some pretty ingenious ideas for buttons for these things!

    6. A place where players can press buttons to warp to different towns in the server. Again, doesn't need to be a large build - just a wall of warp buttons. But, more creative options are more interesting!

    7. {OPTIONAL} A place for portals to be located. This is an optional thing, since we don't currently use portals (and will likely not use them for some time), but if eventually we want to reincorporate world portals as an option, we'd like the ability to seamlessly incorporate portals in a way that doesn't just look like we slapped a few gateways onto an existing build. You can even provide alternative options for the type of gateway (the size of the portal is able to be changed) and if you wish to design some kind of special portal-like mini build to be pasted in later if we need it, that's perfectly fine too!

    8. {OPTIONAL} A place for staff heads to be placed in a billboard-like fashion. It is useful for us to show at spawn who the staff members are, so new players know who to ask for help if they run into problems (this is more important with the vanity tags we've handed out as donation incentives lately). While we're not making this a requirement per se, we'd really appreciate it if some thought could go into at least a small area somewhere on the spawn where we can place staff heads and names underneath with signs.

    9. {OPTIONAL} A set of games or activities to participate in, or at least something to explore while on spawn! Some activities for people to take place in that give small rewards like named snowballs or something like that would be an absolute blast to participate in. Command blocks can be implemented here if desired, but intensive commands will be frowned upon and we'll be evaluating all command usage. If you wish to use command blocks, you'll need to make a special note of it in your application.

    10. {OPTIONAL} A Hall of Nerdfighters inclusion. While we'd really like to continue this tradition at spawn, it's ultimately not necessary to do and if you can find a better replacement for the concept we are certainly open to hearing such things.

    Now, we know, this is a HUGE request of you guys, and as such, we want to give you an appropriate amount of time to take a crack at it. We intentionally started it during the summer, and we're going to make the due date faaaaaar in the future - in fact, the contest will end one week before the server's birthday, and the final reveal will be on the server's third birthday, September 16th, 2015! This will be a fantastic birthday present to our wonderful server for three years of amazing memories with you guys, and it'll also be a great way to ring in the next stage of our development as both a Minecraft server and a Nerdfighter community.

    We're really looking forward to seeing what you guys can come up with. Submissions are open NOW!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Adjudicator's Process:
    Myself, as well as two staff members who are not participating in the competition, will be teaming up with three players who are also not participating to collectively assess and judge the results from the competition. This way an equal representation of players and staff get to pick out what will eventually be the next spawn for our server! We will most likely be picking players who are well-known in the community, have contributed significantly in the past in some form or fashion, and display a willingness to invest the effort needed to deliberate and choose a good spawn. We are aware that those folks will most likely be helping build spawns, so it will be a factor we consider.
    The judges will be chosen and approached shortly after applications open, and announced probably a few weeks later once everything is finalized.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Oh, yeah, I almost forgot...

    The winners of the spawn contest will, aside from having their own spawn featured as the primary spawn for the foreseeable future in Nerdcrafteria, possibly being included in promotional pictures and videos taken of the server as well as being personally approved by Hank himself, also receive $50 Buycraft Credit to be used however they please. Second and Third place winners will also be chosen, and they will receive $20 Credit and $10 Credit, respectively.

    Good luck, and have fun!

    Sincerely,
    ~The Staff of Nerdcrafteria~

      o.0 This is amazing. I would like to participate but life usually has other ideas. Either way this is fantastic and thank you to Hank & Staff for opening this up to the population of NC. I cannot wait to see the builds!!

      Additional Node: Staff ARE permitted to work on this as well. For those curious about the judge's choosing process, this is the basic formula I'm going to go with:

      Does the spawn point need to be in the center of the build?

      Not necessarily, but keep in mind where the spawn will be located and plan accordingly. There's no point in building a great spawn if people pop in and then have their backs to 90% of it! We'll also as a staff be taking a bit of liberty with the spawn area, or we might ask if you would mind moving the spawn if we feel for some reason it's not in a workable place.

      There is, ultimately, a lot of flexibility. If you can come up with a creative and ingenious way for us to put the spawn spot on one corner at 124x124, then we'll definitely consider doing it!

      and now my brain is booming with ideas...

      Oh, Islid, a question:
      What direction, N/S/E/W, will players be facing upon arrival?
    15. Islid

      Totally configurable and up to you. They can even look up or down in certain directions depending on what the best thing to look at on the spawn might be (I.E. if a sign is hanging up above the doorway you spawn in front of, you can spawn looking up at the sign if need be).

      this looks like fun! but at the same time hard... well. the more hard, the more fun :D question for islid, can we do more then one spawn to submit?

      Do we need to keep in mind the Hall of Nerdfighters needs an entrance?

      also for this border, is it currently the stone bricks around the outside or the grass one layer in?

      If you wish, but they are a LOT of work. It might be better to focus on one really hard than split your attention. If you feel you can work on multiple spawns, then go for it - you know your own ability levels better than us!

      Currently, the border is the stone bricks around the whole spawn.

      The Hall of Nerdfighters is an optional inclusion. I added that to the OP.

      Not sure if there's already a plan for it, but would it be possible to stick the current arms/insignia on a hill somewhere outside of NV once the new spawn is chosen? It'd be nice to keep it around somehow, since it's been a part of our lives here for the last... however long it's been.
